Westwind's 5kW wind turbine is a perfect mid-size wind power option for home, remote or commercial use. Their unique design includes many of the best features developed over the history of small wind generators, which combine to produce one of the most efficient mid-range turbines available today. Some of these key features include:
Automatic and manual furling: The Westwind's body and yaw axis are offset, so the turbine automatically furls (turns out of direct wind) in high wind conditions, preventing turbine damage from excessive wind force. Additonally, the furling action can be activated by the manual furling cable, enabling you to slow the blades so they can be stopped for safe routine maintenance.
Sealed permanent magnet generator: Westwind's specially designed brushless permanent magnet generators not only further simplify the turbine components, reducing need for repair and maintenance, they also allow the turbine to be stopped easily in low to moderate wind, for any needed servicing. Sealing the generator further improves reliability by keeping out foreign particles and corrosive salt spray (in marine/coastal installations).
Three-blade upwind design: The three blade rotor provides greater stability than two-blade turbines, reducing "yaw chatter" and vibrations. This not only reduces turbine noise, but prevents excessive vibration from causing wear on the other turbine components, improving overall reliability and service life. The upwind design further reduces noise and improves efficiency by keeping the rotor out of the downwind tower turbulence.
Direct drive rotor: Rather than using a gearbox to link the rotor to the generator, Westwind turbines feature a direct-drive design, with the generator connected directly to the rotor. This not only means less moving parts to wear and replace, improving durability, it also eliminates gearbox friction, which both decreases noise and reduces start-up speed.
Galvanized and powder coated: Westwind hot-dip galvanizes all of their turbines' steel components, greatly reducing corrosion at any site. The optional while powdercoat finish further increases the durability, especially for coastal installations.
The Westwind 5kW turbine starts up at only 4.46mph wind speed, power production cuts in at 6.7mph, and the turbine furls to prevent damage at 35.7mph (but continues producing power while furled!)
Westwind's standard model offers 48VDC output, but other voltages are available by special order. Please call for more information if you require a different voltage.
