LVM Ltd's 100 watt Aqua4Gen LVMAQ412 water turbine is a unique semi-submersible design. Designed for use as a tow-behind generator to supply power to recreational boats, it could also be installed above a fast-moving river to supply power to a cabin or campsite.
The alternator housing is mounted above water, most often tied to the rear deck railing of a moving boat, while the propeller/shaft assembly is submerged 1-3 meters under water, connected to the alternator housing via a cable or rope. As the boat moves forward (or the river current passes beneath), the propeller rotates the alternator drive shaft through the rope/cable link.
This innovative design makes it very simple to remove the propeller from the water when boat speeds exceed the turbine's ideal speed/drag range, or during inclement weather. It's portability also makes it an ideal "temporary" power source for vacation cabins if a mounting location can be devised above a sufficiently fast-moving river.
Each turbine is supplied with two blade sets, enabling you to optimize the turbine's performance at different speeds. The Aqua4Gen is available in both 12 and 24 volt (LVMAQ424) configurations. It starts to generate power at 2.5 knots boat speed, and produces up to a continuous 11 amps at 8 knots boat speed when fitted with large turbine blades (110mm), and 10 amps at 10 knots with smaller blades (90mm) installed.
